March 2012 Grafting Workshop - Tuesday, January 17, 2012

The annual chapter grafting workshop will be held on March 10th at  10:00am and 11:00am sharp. Because of popular demand there will be two split sessions this year so that we can ensure we work with you one on one. This year we have ordered apple, pear, and universal peach, nectarine, plum and apricot root stock. The workshop is limited to 30 members but we have ordered enough root stock so that every one can purchase at least two. The root stock will cost 5.00 each which also covers the potting soil and pots. Because of liability reasons the workshop is limited to members in good standing of CRFG Inc. and the North SD county chapter only. No exceptions will be made to this policy and membership status will be checked when you reserve. Also you will be required to sign a waiver of liability at the door. Reservations must be made through Dottie Logan at (760) 806-6678. Dottie will provide the location and directions when you call. Please let her know if you would also like to volunteer to bring refreshments to share. We are also in need of scion wood. Please send an email to Ben Pierce at ncsdcrfg@cox.net if you have some to spare. You can also email Ben with any particular questions you may have about the root stock. We look forward to a fun and rewarding daywith every one. This is a great opportunity to learn how to graft the scion wood you pick up at the January chapter meeting and scion wood exchange. You are welcome to bring that to the workshop.

Botanical Explorer - Joseph Simcox - Wednesday, November 30, 2011

For those who missed the presentation by Joseph Simcox, a video of this presentation has been made available at:

http://s90032380.onlinehome.us/wordpress/2011/12/02/joseph-simcox-talk

----- Original notice follows -----

How would you like to meet someone who constantly travels the world, searching for (and finding) rare edibles?  Someone extremely knowledgeable, energetic, a great speaker, and has fantastic photos and stories to share with you?

That person is Joseph Simcox, and when he returns to the USA, he’s stopping in San Diego!

About Joseph Simcox

Joseph Simcox is a Botanical Explorer and Global Food Plant researcher.  His work as a generalist is to identify the world’s food plant resources, promote the use and improvement of thousands of species to ensure food security for all.  He does not presently have a home, but lives out of two suitcases.  His obsession has taken him to just shy of 100 countries for his studies.

We’re extremely pleased to announce a special joint San Diego/North San Diego County presentation on Wednesday, November 30th at 7 p.m., at the Balboa Park meeting room.

Mark your calendar!

Joseph Simcox summarizes his upcoming presentation this way:

We live on a planet which may seem smaller because of instantaneous communication, but in reality is as large and unknown as ever.

The marvels of the botanical world never cease to amaze me, and in this world of marvels also lie the solutions to some of man's biggest practical problems.   I will approach the talk as a Botanical Explorer, taking the participants through various zones and regions around the world while describing the species and making observations about their ecology, use and potential.

Mark your calendar!

Wednesday, November 30th, 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.

Casa del Prado, Room 101

Balboa Park

San Diego, CA

Map of the location

For those in the North San Diego County Chapter:

The Casa del Prado building is next to the Botanical Building and the Natural History Museum.  The easiest way to get there is to take Highway 163 to Park Blvd., take Village Place, and find parking.  The safest bet would be to try parking in one of the two lots on your immediate left or right as soon as you turn onto Village Place.  See one of the Internet map services for full details.

The meeting room is on the ground level.  To get there, walk past the Casa del Prado Theatre along Village Dr., go right into the large courtyard between the two buildings then down a ramp into the Casa del Prado.  The room will be on your left.  See attached map.

Travel a little early due to traffic, plus parking is sometimes tough to find and it will take about 5 minutes to walk from parking to the meeting room.

You really, REALLY won’t want to miss this!

Sincerely,

Jim Neitzel, Ron Hurov and Cory Krell
