Part of our mission at Kuffel Creek Apple Nursery is to test apple varieties in our warm climate where citrus is the traditional crop. We have found this to be absolutely necessary as even though growers in other areas have given us their recommendations, nothing can replace actual testing. Place of origin or region of current cultivation are not reliable indicators of how an apple variety will do here. Our initial successes indicate that many, many more varieties than once thought are well suited to our climate of hot summers and warm winters.

One of the least-known treasure troves of information in San Diego County is that over two hundred Master Gardeners provide home gardening and pest control information throughout the county, FREE to the public.
Master Gardeners are volunteers trained and supervised by the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE).
The mission of the UCCE is to conduct research on new pests and issues affecting the county, and to provide research based information to the public. The county of San Diego provides support for the local UCCE office which is known as the Farm and Home Advisor Department.

About California Rare Fruit Growers
Our parent non-profit organization, founded in 1968, is made up of amateur and professional fruit growers. There are 17 chapters located in California, Arizona, Nevada and Texas. We share information about the propagation and growing of common and rare varieties of fruit. The group also exchanges plant material and assists commercial entities and researchers in the evaluation of new varieties of fruit. We produce a bi-monthly magazine called “The Fruit Gardener” which contains valuable information about fruit gardening. Each year the chapters get together for a “Festival Of Fruit” conference. Each chapter has many activities, guest speakers, fruit tastings, plant sales and field trips related to the growing of fruit.
Our Chapter Information
Membership is open to anyone interested in fruit gardening. Benefits include talks by leading horticulturists, discounts at local nurseries, free mulch, fruit tastings, field trips, monthly newsletters, member garden tours, picnics/parties, and more!
